Rewriting the Script: Why You Don’t Have to Be “Healed” to Be Seen

If you look at the world of luxury portrait photography, it usually looks like a curated collection of people who have never had a bad day in their lives. It’s all perfectly coiffed hair, serene smiles, and a vibe that says, “I woke up like this, and also, I’ve never known a moment of self-doubt.”

But I’m going to let you in on a secret: that’s not the whole story. Not even close.

For a long time, I let the shadows of my childhood run the show. I’m talking about the kind of shadows that don't just go away when you turn on the light. Abuse leaves a voice in your head, a nasty, persistent, lying voice, that swears you aren’t enough.

It tells you that you’re broken, that you’re too much or not enough, and that you certainly don’t belong in front of a camera being celebrated. I carried that voice with me for years, and it led to a lot of low self-esteem and some questionable choices.

But here’s the thing: I’m rewriting the script. And I want to help other women rewrite theirs too.

SHADOWS

We all have them. Whether it’s trauma from the past, the weight of expectations, or just that quiet, nagging belief that you have to earn your right to be seen.

In this industry, there’s this weird, unspoken rule that you should only book a photoshoot when you’ve reached your goal weight, when your skin is perfect, or when you’ve finally figured it all out.

I’m calling total BS on that.

If we waited until we were perfectly healed or "fixed" to document our lives, our photo albums would be empty. I spent years hiding because I didn't think the woman I was, the one struggling, the one fighting, was worth the ink, let alone a fine art portrait. I thought luxury was for the "after" version of me. You know, the one who doesn't have bad days.

But the "before" version? The one who is currently in the trenches? She is the one who needs to be seen the most. She is the one doing the hard work. Fighting for my self-worth is a daily practice for me. It’s therapy. It’s finding the right meds. It’s meditation that brings me back when my brain wants to time-travel to those dark places. It’s messy, it’s loud, and it’s very, very real.

REWRITE

One of my favorite, and honestly, most surprising, tools for healing has been stepping in front of the camera. I know, I know. It sounds a bit vain or maybe even counterintuitive. How does getting a photo taken help with deep-seated trauma?

It’s because when I see myself through a lens with intention and self-acceptance, I can finally separate what happened to me from who I am.

When women come to my studio, we aren't just taking pictures. We are creating evidence. We are capturing the version of you that exists right now, not the version the world told you to be, and certainly not the version your trauma tries to convince you that you are.
