Photographing Melanie

Just months shy of turning 60, Melanie walked through the studio door with a free-spirited, bright personality. She wanted to experience boudoir.

I asked her what her favorite color was, and she said two words that does a great job at summing up her character - "disco ball." I thought, let's show that in her portraits!

At the start of her session, I could tell she was a bit nervous, which of course 99.9% of women are. I reassured her about how normal that is, and that it’s vulnerable getting in front of the camera and putting yourself out there, especially in lingerie!

After chatting with our hair and makeup artist while getting glammed up, she started to feel a bit more relaxed.

Then we started with the most colorful backdrop we have – the flower wall. Throughout the session I asked her about her life, and learned about her love of Mexico and all things tie-dye. By the last click of the shutter, she was comfortable and enjoying herself.

As I posed her, I remembered what we talked about before the session. She said the number one thing she wanted was relaxed hands, because of how difficult that is for her.

She lives with rheumatoid arthritis and has dealt with the autoimmune disease for over 20 years. It causes inflammation, joint pain, stiffness, weakness, and fatigue.

Although normally it’s not noticeable to others, she said she often moves her hands to compensate for the pain she experiences every day. So when she sees photographs of herself with her hands looking out of place, all she can think of is the pain.

When Melanie came in for her reveal, and saw her portraits printed on the wall, she didn’t think of pain. She thought of confidence, beauty, and empowerment. “You really captured my spirit!” she said. Melanie was thrilled that I took care to pose her hands.

It was a moving experience, and I’d be lying if I said there weren’t any tears - tears of joy, relief, and growth.

Not only was she transformed by the experience, but so was I. It made me realize how extremely important it for everyone to see themselves in photographs as beautiful, and that what I do matters.
